Role Overview:

The Director Software Engineering (DSE) is a leadership role reporting to the Chief Information & Technology Officer (CTO). This role requires a highly experienced, hands-on professional responsible for the successful design, development, deployment, and support of XPRIZE’s core software infrastructure including web front-end, backend, and data related services. The DSE works closely with key stakeholders including marketing, prize operations, advancement, legal, and human resources to ensure their varied needs are met. The DSE works closely with the Director of IT Ops & Infrastructure to produce highly reliable, globally deployed, software & systems for our growing baseline of users. Primary Responsibilities:

The DSE works closely with the CI & TO to set the vision for the XPRIZE software, and owns the software architecture, development, development methodologies, strategic roadmaps, deliveries, testing, and support of all core XPRIZE software, ensuring that the overall capabilities meet the growing needs of the organization.
Specific duties include:

  • Plan, coordinate, and direct all daily software operational activities
  • Direct efforts of front-end, back-end, QA, and product definition team members
  • Develop software capability roadmaps with a 12-18 month window, updated quarterly
  • Hands-on development of key software architectural components
  • Maintain currency of software baseline for standard components like .NET Core, Angular, SQL, MongoDB,…
  • Hire and develop talent
  • Work closely with director of systems to refine the security architecture and implement best-in-class procedures and controls to ensure information and data security
  • Assist CI&TO in designing cloud-based data infrastructure suitable for AI/ML applications for the many XPRIZE competitors to use for analysis and data visualization
  • Work with CI & TO to establish annual operating budget consistent with roadmaps


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering is required.
  • 12+ years in software development with progressively more responsibility in hands-on roles
  • 2+ years in director level role leading a software development team
  • 5+ years of professional programming experience with C# and .NET Core
  • 2+ years of professional development experience with Angular 8+
  • 2+ years of TypeScript
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server as well as other NOSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB)
  • Significant experience with front end technologies: HTML5, CSS3, Bootstrap, jQuery
  • Highly experienced in building and maintaining REST & Web API
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, Function Apps, Service Bus, Logic App
  • Experience with common design patterns
  • Familiar with current test harness building technologies
  • Comfortable with agile development methodologies and understanding how to adapt these methodologies to maximize effectiveness.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Azure DevOps for Project Management / Docker, etc.
    • Familiarity with Swagger UI
    • Microsoft Identity Server
    • OAuth2 and OIDC Client
    • Jira, Confluence, or other industry equivalents
    • Experience in managing remote teams domestic and abroad
    • Experience with various secure computing container technologies
